Semi-Invasive and Invasive Techniques: Precision in Identifying Graves and Human Remains.

At the Centre for Missing Persons, we understand that certain investigations require a more hands-on approach to ensure the accurate identification of graves and human remains. Our semi-invasive and invasive techniques are designed to balance the need for precision with the utmost respect for the site and the remains. These methods are employed when non-invasive techniques alone do not provide sufficient information or when confirmation of findings is necessary.

Our Approach:

1. Soil Sampling and Analysis:

We begin with targeted soil sampling, a minimally invasive technique that involves extracting small soil samples from areas identified as potential grave sites. By analyzing these samples, we can detect changes in soil composition that indicate the presence of grave-cut soil mixing, a key indicator of past burial activity.

2. Core Sampling for DNA Testing:

In situations where soil sampling suggests a possible burial, we proceed with core sampling. This involves taking a narrow, deep core sample from the site, allowing us to test for the presence of human DNA. The detection of human DNA in these samples can confirm the presence of human remains and provide further evidence of a burial site.

3. Layered Confirmation Process:

Our approach is methodical and layered. We start with the least invasive techniques and progressively move to more invasive methods only as necessary. This ensures that we gather as much information as possible while minimizing disruption to the site.

4. Detailed Documentation and Analysis:

All findings from our semi-invasive and invasive techniques are meticulously documented. We analyze the data in the context of our previous non-invasive surveys, providing a comprehensive understanding of the site’s history and the likelihood of human burials.

Why Semi-Invasive and Invasive Techniques?

While non-invasive methods are often sufficient for initial surveys, they sometimes fall short in complex or ambiguous cases. Semi-invasive and invasive techniques, such as soil and core sampling, allow us to gather conclusive evidence, especially in areas where degradation or environmental factors have made non-invasive detection challenging.

Applications:

Confirmation of Non-Invasive Findings: Provides additional evidence to support or refute data obtained from non-invasive techniques.

Identification of Degraded or Old Burial Sites: Detects remains that may not be visible through geophysical surveys due to age or environmental conditions.

Supporting Legal and Historical Investigations: Provides scientifically validated evidence for use in legal cases or historical research.

Our Commitment:

The Centre for Missing Persons is dedicated to using the most appropriate and respectful methods for each investigation. Our semi-invasive and invasive techniques are employed with precision and care, ensuring that we honor the significance of the sites we investigate while providing reliable and accurate results.
